Located on what was once a primary sand dune wedged between the Bayside suburbs of Beaumaris and Black Rock, this house is connected to its' surrounding coastal landscape through colour and horizontal form. Influenced by a fondness of mid-century Australian architecture, the project brief was to maximise the surrounding environment's attributes.

A foundation of natural white render to the ground floor level, anchors the building, enabling the feature colours and detailing to merge with the natural setting; weathered silver gum greys, shadowy blacks, rust and a vibrant leaf green. The use of reflective glass panels not only captures the bay's spectacular view but also reflects the surrounding gum tree landscape, merging the accent colours with the environment.

The unique shape of the staircase maintains head height under the glazed roof above that is angled to satisfy boundary setback requirements.

The upper level parents retreat can be divided via an operable wall to separate the bed from the living space. It, along with the panoramic views and western deck, can be enjoyed by adults and guests to watch sunsets and retreat from the adolescent living spaces below.

The louvers to the alfresco roof can be retracted to one side or fully extended and closed to create a sealed roof, creating an outdoor room with the capacity to be experienced in a variety of weather conditions. This connects the family to the environment, including shading from the west.

The Ultimate alfresco. Creating drama and interest whilst maintaining a casual environment for gatherings of family and friends, the alfresco encourages informal gatherings to flow from inside to outside. Carefully designed and detailed retractable sun shading device to maximise solar gain.

"There is a freshness and a human scale which allows indoors to flow outdoors seamlessly"
